Consultancy

Senior Director, Health Economics

Canada

Permanent

The Job

Company Overview

Our client is a specialist, independent HEOR consultancy known for scientific quality and a senior-led delivery model. Their work spans health economics, real world evidence, evidence synthesis and outcomes research, helping pharmaceutical, biotech and medical technology companies build the evidence they need to secure reimbursement and market access.

The business combines in-house expertise across health economics, epidemiology, biostatistics and outcomes research, and works closely with leading academic and clinical advisors. Senior people stay close to the science and are actively involved in delivery, which makes this an environment where scientific leadership carries real weight.

With health economics a key growth area, they are now hiring a Senior Director to set the scientific and strategic direction of the practice, based in Canada.

The Role

This permanent, full-time role is ideal for an experienced health economist who wants genuine influence over how a practice grows, without stepping away from the modelling or the client work. The Senior Director will lead a portfolio of health economics projects, many with a global remit, and hold overall responsibility for the quality of what goes out to clients.

Much of the role centres on senior ownership of economic modelling, particularly cost-effectiveness and budget impact work. You will also guide the choice of evidence synthesis methods, including NMA and MAIC, so that every model rests on a sound evidence base. Clients will see you as a trusted senior advisor, and you will play a leading part in winning new business.

You will lead a team of Directors, Associate Directors and more junior colleagues, work across epidemiology, evidence synthesis and biostatistics, and help shape the future of the health economics offering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set the scientific and strategic direction across health economics and modelling projects

  • Lead the development of economic models, with a focus on cost-effectiveness and budget impact analyses

  • Build models hands-on where needed, including the underlying statistical work, independently or alongside biostatistics colleagues

  • Guide targeted and systematic literature reviews that inform model inputs

  • Advise on which evidence synthesis methods to use and how, including NMA and MAIC

  • Ensure study designs and methodologies are robust, fit for purpose and aligned with the wider evidence strategy

  • Act as senior reviewer and quality lead on key deliverables, from protocols to technical reports and client presentations

  • Serve as a trusted senior advisor to clients, leading strategic conversations and building long-term partnerships

  • Drive proposals, scoping and business development, including opening new client relationships

  • Support project leads and managers with prioritisation, coordination and problem-solving

  • Line manage and develop Directors, Associate Directors and junior staff, supporting their performance and career growth

  • Help plan resourcing and the deployment of scientific expertise across the portfolio

  • Lead or review publications, conference abstracts, presentations and technical reports

Qualifications & Experience

  • MSc or PhD in Health Economics, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • 10+ years' experience in health research, ideally in consultancy, or alternatively in academia

  • Proven experience leading economic models and broader health economics programmes, ideally in a consulting environment

  • Clear scientific and strategic leadership across complex, multi-stream projects

  • Strong line management experience, with a track record of developing both junior and senior staff

  • Excellent client-facing skills, able to communicate confidently with both scientific and commercial audiences

  • Strong commercial awareness, including experience in business development, scoping and proposal writing

Desirable:

  • Hands-on statistical analysis skills

  • Working knowledge of statistical software such as R, Stata or SAS

  • Experience using NMA and MAIC outputs to inform economic models

  • Experience on global health economics projects

  • Peer-reviewed publications or major conference presentations

The Offer

  • Permanent, full-time position

  • Based in Canada, with flexibility across major Canadian cities

  • A senior leadership role with real influence over the scientific direction and growth of the health economics practice

  • The opportunity to lead and develop a talented, multidisciplinary team

  • Close collaboration with respected academic and clinical advisors
